Our Conductor

Greg Heltman is the Conductor and Founder of Santa Fe Concert Band.

Greg Heltman founded the Santa Fe Concert Band in 1983, and has conducted the Band since then.  Mr. Heltman is Founder of the Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. He also is a trumpeter with the Santa Fe Symphony. 

Greg was born in Los Alamos and grew up in Santa Fe. He began playing the trumpet at age nine and continued his studies with Gene Kuntz, former trumpeter with the Metropolitan Opera and Santa Fe Opera Orchestras.
Greg graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree cum laude from the University of the Pacific, where he studied with Dale Fjerstad. He then moved to New York to study with Mel Broils of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

In 1981 Greg moved to Venezuela where he taught trumpet for the “El Sistema” Orchestra de Juvenile program. He and his wife Elaine moved to Israel for two years where he was a member of the Israel Sinfonietta. The Heltmans returned to Santa Fe, where Greg founded the Santa Fe Symphony in 1984.

Mr Heltman has performed with the Stockton (CA) Symphony; was principal trumpet with the Hidden Valley Chamber & Opera Orchestra (Carmel Valley, CA); trumpeter with the Santa Fe Opera and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival.
